Jacuzzi In The Sea
“Sea Jacuzzi? What is that?”, I asked and I could see P smiling ear to ear. I knew instantly that he has found something interesting while researching our two destinations in Malaysia. He later showed me a video explaining that it was one of the activities offered during some cruises in Langkawi.
Two days after our arrival in Langkawi we headed to Eagle Square where one could book tickets for ferry and various cruises offering sightseeing around Langkawi. Browsing through the catalogues we particularly looked for the sunset cruises. And there it was, the one offering a variety of water activity in addition to sunset views, drinks and dinner. After much thought, we decided on the one that met most of our requirements.

At 3.30PM we reported at the jetty walking in the scorching sun, we made our way to the cruise boat, The Beauty Princess. We occupied one of the decks and explored the ship before it started cruising. Cruise offered sundecks, relaxing chairs, an AC cabin as part of the service. Peppy music played in the background throughout, only pausing for the announcements in Malay which we couldn’t make any sense of.

Free flow mocktails and cocktails started once the ship left the jetty. Cruising by MahaTower and Eagle Square was the perfect opportunity to capture some pictures. The staff even offered to click some pictures of us together. 20mins in to sea, they kicked-off the water activities. First one was of course the Jacuzzi, about which P was most excited about.

They spread out a net into the open sea at the back of the vessel as the speed slowed. With life-jackets on, we jumped in to sea. Though knowing we wouldn’t drown, I was still scared. The comfort of the net at the bottom and buoys at the side was some relief. The undercurrent of sea waves gave the effect of a jacuzzi, hence the name. Though P was thrilled with the experience and felt we should have stayed longer, I on the other hand was much fearful about being in the sea despite being within safety controls. My heart raced considerably faster and longed for me to return onboard ASAP!

Minutes later, ship anchored few hundred feet away from a secluded beach for rest of the activities and sunset. Water slides landing in the sea was open now. Paddle boards were thrown into the seat for the people to try them out. We quickly opted for paddle-boarding. My height came as a hindrance as I tried my best to paddle in sync with my husband and not let the board flip. The depth of the sea beneath my feet took the better of me. Without falling once, we successfully returned to the base. It was evident from his face the P was disappointed with our early return. He went ahead to take the slide and swim through the sea, while I enjoyed watching people experimenting with their paddle-boards.

People changed back from their swimming costumes, when dinner was served in cue with the sunset. Being the only ones, in addition to another Indian couple, with vegetarian food option, we were served with specially packaged food. It contained coconut-milk rice with boiled vegetables and spring rolls on the side.

Sun began its journey to wind down for the day and say goodbye. The hues of yellow, orange and pink filled the sky as we witnessed one of the most beautiful sunsets of our life. Even the camera couldn’t capture the true feeling of this sunset. As the ship started to cruise back, we felt the nostalgia of the moment we were already in. If only we could stop time and be in this moment forever.

We knew it would take days for us to come out of this memory.

I’ve never heard of sea jacuzzi and like you, I think I would have been terrified. I grew up on the Atlantic Ocean and was in the water (and sunbathing) every chance I got. Now in my 70s, I’m not a fan of beach time. The only thing I still love is the sound of the waves an empty beach lit by the moon…
