Call At Midnight #AtoZChallenge

“Yes, I’ll be there in ten minutes”, he whispered as he jumped out of the bed.

Quickly pulling over a pair of denim and grey T-shirt over his head, he picked up his ID card and car keys with one hand and pocketed his cellphone in the right pocket of his jeans. He quietly sneaked out of the door, not waking up his wife and daughter. The escalator took forever to reach 10th floor from the ground floor where it might have been abandoned. He cursed the time it took. Meanwhile, he typed a text message to her wife telling his agenda to leave. His disappearance from the house in late hours of the night had become quite usual. He hated it as much as his family despised it.Driving his Hyundai i20 at the speed of 80kmph, he reached his destination in ten minutes. Otherwise, any other hour of the day would have taken him more than half an hour to reach from Andheri to Powai. Parking outside the tallest building, he cursed the multistory buildings again. It again took him another five minutes to reach seventh floor. As soon as he exited the escalator, the sight from the end of the corridor caught his attention. He half-ran half-walked through the familiar corridor towards the main door of the house.

“Mr. David, thanks for turning up instantly’, said the man dressed in khakhi uniform.
“I had to. Tell me all about the case Mr. Gupta”, he managed to speak in a formal tone.
“Dr. Singh with his wife and daughter were found dead around 1am tonight. Everyone one was in their respective bedroom. It looks like somebody killed them while they were in deep sleep.”
“Any clues so far?”
“There are absolutely no clues left by the murderer, Sir. The bodies are still here and will be sent for post-mortem in a few minutes. There is a stab wound in each body, probably with a knife which is no where to be found in the house. There are no blood stains elsewhere, no sign of resistance against the murder. I think they knew the murderer”, he paused for a second and continued, ” but what made me call you was not only a need of detective, Mr. David, but something else .” He hesitated to continue.
“What, Mr. Gupta?”
“Actually, the last call from Mrs. Reeti’s cell phone was made to you at 11:58pm. It’s the around the estimated time of murder.”
“So, are you suggesting that I’m related to this murder?”
The police officer kept his silence.

….To be continued here

  1. Woa that’s intense… Can’t wait to read more. Absolutely loved the fast paced narration.

  2. What a cliff-hanger! I find it particularly interesting that this detective sacrifices a normal family life for his craft, and now finds himself implicated in a murder. Look forward to reading more!

Glad I found you through the A to Z Challenge.
